Wonderful Group Marathon Blends Fitness, Women Empowerment and Community Impact
By Alain Kabinda
On the surface, it is a marathon — a day of running,
fitness, and celebration. But beneath the excitement surrounding the upcoming
Wonderful Group Marathon lies a much bigger ambition: using sport as a catalyst
for healthier communities and stronger opportunities for women and girls across
Zambia.
As Zambia continues to grapple with growing
lifestyle-related illnesses, youth challenges, and social inequalities,
organisers of the marathon believe the event can become more than an annual
race. They see it as a movement capable of bringing together business,
communities, and ordinary citizens around a shared cause.
The marathon, scheduled for May 30, 2026, forms part of the
18th anniversary celebrations of Wonderful Group of Companies, one of Zambia’s
expanding industrial enterprises.
But company officials insist the event is not simply about
marking corporate success.
Speaking during a sponsorship handover ceremony in Lusaka,
Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mr. Roy Mwamba described the initiative as a
deliberate effort to invest back into society.
Mr. Mwamba added that the marathon represents a chance to
combine health promotion with social empowerment — particularly for women and
girls who continue to face barriers in education, economic participation, and
leadership opportunities.
“We believe empowered women are the foundation of strong
families and thriving communities,” Mr. Mwamba said.
“This event is not only about celebrating 18 years of
business growth, but also about creating opportunities and inspiring positive
change.” Added Mr. Mwamba.
His remarks reflect a growing trend among corporate
institutions in Zambia that are increasingly linking business success to social
responsibility and community wellbeing.
The marathon has already attracted support from major
companies, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and community
organisations — a sign that the initiative is resonating beyond the corporate
sector.
For many sponsors, supporting the marathon is about more
than brand visibility. It is about aligning with broader national conversations
around health, inclusion, and empowerment.
Meanwhile Chief Financial Officer Harikrishna Bomarevi said
the vision behind the event was intentionally designed to go beyond sport.
“This event is not just about running,” Bomarevi explained.
“It is about bringing communities together, promoting healthy living, and
creating a platform that uplifts women and girls.”
In many ways, the marathon arrives at a time when Zambia —
like much of the world — is paying greater attention to preventative healthcare
and wellness.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that preventable
illnesses linked to inactive lifestyles are placing increasing pressure on
families and healthcare systems. Organisers say encouraging physical activity
through public events such as marathons can help change attitudes toward
fitness and long-term health.
At the same time, the event seeks to spotlight the
importance of investing in women and girls.
Across many communities, women continue to carry the burden
of economic hardship, caregiving responsibilities, and limited access to
opportunities. Supporters of the marathon argue that empowering women has a
ripple effect that benefits entire communities.
That message has attracted support from institutions
including United Capital Fertilizer, Marco Polo Towers, Goldman Insurance,
First National Bank (FNB), and Indo Zambia Bank, among others.
Meanwhile, Zambia State Insurance Company (ZSIC) General
Insurance pledged insurance coverage for the event, while several organisations
have provided logistical and financial support.
Organisers hope the marathon will eventually grow into a
nationally recognised annual event capable of attracting tourism, encouraging
fitness culture, and promoting Zambia’s development agenda.
For participants, however, the marathon may ultimately
represent something even more personal — a reminder that health, opportunity,
and community progress are deeply connected.
As preparations continue ahead of race day, the Wonderful
Group Marathon is steadily transforming from a corporate celebration into a
broader symbol of how sport can unite communities, inspire healthier living,
and champion the empowerment of women and girls across Zambia.
